2018 Year in Review

Image
Warning: I'm a numbers guy... there's a lot of that in this post! Well, I posted a few months ago that I had already completed my resolution to paint 365 minis in 2018. At that time I set myself a stretch goal of 500 minis!!! Soooo how did I do on that one? Well... I didn't paint 500 minis from scratch in the year, but I completed 511 minis in 2018 and another 45 smaller pieces. A really healthy total I think. I feel like this year has taken me a long way toward getting back on top of that lead mountain. There is still a lot to do but I honestly think that I could be realistically on top of things by the end of 2019 if I continue with the same mindset. Carry over: (22 + 11 small) Space Hulk:  6xTerminators Mansions of Madness:  2xShoggoths, 2xCthonians, 1xDark Young, 1xDunwich Horror Blood Bowl:  Wood Elf & Chaos Apothecaries, Ball Marker Warhammer Underworlds:  Reaver 5xSpiteclaw Lady Morrigan Wander: Tank Misc: 10xBarrels Comple...

365 minis painted in 2018!

I am super excited to be able to say I completed my goal of averaging a mini/day in 2018! It's been a fairly absorbing task and has left me largely unable to paint for competitions, it has however hammered into the mountain of unpainted minis (particularly for boardgames). So to keep moving forward, I have a new target - 500!!! This should also mean I will have fully painted 5 boardgames this year (Space Hulk, Burning of Prospero, Mansions of Madness, Descent & TMNT: Shadows of the Past). Completed: (369 + 34 small) Space Hulk:  20xSpace Hulk door stands, Chalice, C.A.T. , 23 Genestealers Mansions of Madness: Darrell Simmons, William Yorrick, Gloria Goldberg, Carolyn Fern, Joe Diamond, Monterey Jack, Bob Jenkins, Dexter Drake, Vincent Lee, Mandy Thompson, Sister Mary, Father Mateo, Tommy Muldoon, Diana Stanley, Finn Edwards, Preston Fairmont, Carson Sinclair, Charlie Kane, Agatha Crane, Lily Chen, Minh Thi Phan, Wilson Richards, Marie Lambeau, Akeche Onyele, Rita Yo...

Horror Unleashed

Image
I've been working hard to catch up on my mini/day target having slipped some 40 days behind schedule. Things aren't as bleak as that may initially indicate however as I've already done a lot of prep work on both my Mansions of Madness minis and Descent minis ahead of my trip to Ireland. Now that I am on that trip, I am in a position to churn out quite a number of minis pretty quickly. A lot of the monsters were painted up mostly by the airbrush during this prep stage, leaving just the finishing touches for me to do. The minis are also generally a pretty rough quality so I have no issues with being a little rough and ready in how I finish them. Having said that - you put them all together and suddenly they look pretty damn good. Of course the keen eyed among you will notice that this is not quite everything in the set... even after all this time, I'm still working on the last few monsters and investigators... stay tuned for updates. Update: Sept 3rd 2018 Mon...

Some weekend work

Image
The big thing I did this weekend as finish of my piece for a painting duel with The Hobby Sensei and Carlos the Awesome. This is something that I have promised not to post any photos of until the voting is over so as not to bias the results but you can track it all on Game Kastle Mountain View's Facebook Page : Having finished that off, I painted up Wendy Adams from the Arkham Files. All of models I have for Arkham Files come from the Mansions of Madness games but I tend to prioritize painting the ones that have character cards for other games, particularly Arkham Horror Card Game. I am about to start a new D&D session with Carlos the Awesome and have to paint up my character, a smith's son that turned to fighting to make a name for himself: I've also been working on some sculpting. A minotaur for my Chaos Dwarf team and Varag Ghoul Chewer's hand (A friend gave me the model which was incomplete).   Finally, as part of my quest to fill in the ga...

Painting by numbers

Image
Recently I stumbled upon a link that I have seen floating around the web before but it is a useful resource and I wanted to have it down somewhere for future reference - Painting equivalency chart . But that's not why you all are reading this is it? You're here to see what I've been upto. Well... Spent the weekend with the Airbrush and got some minis ready for some further attention: I made a little more headway with some Arkham horror minis: Wendy Adams, as one of the Arkham Horror Card Game characters, gets priority treatment when painting: Worked on some more reroll markers: All in all a productive weekend: I also put some zenithal highlighting onto my Ashigaru... a little too subtle but: In addition to all these fun and games I have gotten myself into a painting duel... I will have a full post on that in a couple of weeks, once it's all wrapped up and the votes are in. - Raggy, signing out

Year in Review: Other Stuff

Image
Blood Bowl is not the only thing I've been working on this year and although it has been my major focus, I have gotten a few other bits and bobs painted up: Samurai One of my major drives this year has been to speed up my painting speed. I noticed when I was working on my Wood Elves in particular that I was very concerned about getting everything just so and it was taking far too long to get things painted up. I know that there are levels. I want figures that look good, especially on the table. This drive towards painting faster (and to a better caliber) has taken a couple of forms, one is quantity, the other is on focus. The Ashigaru Yari are in the former quantity. These are figures I have had in my possession for years and never done anything with. I went on a bit of a crusade to get them assembled (WAY TOO MANY FIDDLY PIECES) and get them painted. With the Samurai, I was looking into how to really churn out a lot of figures, fast and at an acceptable standard. There are a f...

All aboard the Chaos Train

Three more ReRoll markers are completed, leaving just one to be painted (a leader ReRoll). The eventual plan is to have a set of alternative ReRoll markers for the opposition but I am not too worried about getting them sorted for the time being. These guys are already taking a stand beside the field:  One thing I don't think I have shown on this blog before is a habit I have taken up this year of painting dates onto the underside of my painted minis. The idea of this is for me to be able to look back at my painting progress, how I have progressed, the changes that have been made, my rate of painting etc. It also in and of itself a easy way to practice freehand a little: These little buggers have made some progress, there is still quite a bit to do on them, but I hope to get them finished in the next week. I have made some slight progress with my Arkham minis. Behold... a Cultist! They're a little more colorful than most of the ones you see. I wanted to give an ethere...
